Meet Paoki, Cafe Mikro, Folegandros, Greece
Real men love cats. And indeed they teach their families how to love cats too! On the little island of Folegandros in the cyclades, one of the many, many greek islands (with many cats) is a little bar cat called Paoki living the good life in Cafe Mikro. Paoki has been with Nikos Grammatikopoulos and his family for fourteen years and spends her days supervising the goings on from the bar stool. Folegandros, like many Greek Islands, has a something of a stray cat problem. But a few passionate locals are working to change this. Like Santorini Folegandros is seasonal. Tourists come and feed the stray cats in the summer, they breed like crazy and then in winter, the island is abandoned when locals return to the mainland. Only about 600 people live on this island all year round. Not huge numbers. BUT, one thing you will see here is well fed ear clipped cats (a post on that later).
Nickos and his family have Paoki as their main resident bar cat, but sitting in the garden you will notice some other strays, all healthy, fed and sterilised hanging around the street. When Nickos goes away at the end of summer like many do, he arranges for Paoki and his fleet of street cats to be fed by Anthie, local cat saviour who stays there all year round.
Kindness to animals and a great spot for a coffee, pancakes or an Aperol Spritz?
